A new trailer for the Lego Marvel Super Heroes ‘Asgard Pack’ DLC shows off some of the extra characters included with the Thor-themed add-on. The Asgard Pack offers eight additional playable heroes and villains: Malekith, Kurse, Sif, Volstagg, Odin, Hogun, Fandral, and Jane Foster. The pack doesn’t include Thor himself because he already features as one of the game’s many characters anyway.
I am a huge fan of Marvel comics, and I was extremely excited to get a review copy of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment’s “Lego Marvel Super Heroes” for the PS4. This is the best Lego-themed game that has been released so far in my opinion.
There are more than 100 playable Marvel super heroes, and just about every character you can think of is in the game. Some of the characters include, Iron Man, Hulk, Captain America, Venom, Doctor Doom, and Wolverine. One of my favorite characters of all time is The Punisher, so I was ecstatic when I discovered he was in the game.
All of the characters have their own unique special powers, and I was very impressed by that. For example Spider-man can shoot webs, climb on walls and use his spider sense. The Hulk is extremely strong and can lift heavy objects. One really cool feature with the Hulk is that he can turn into Bruce Banner and then back into the Hulk by holding down a button. There are times where you will need to talk to people or interact with something and the Hulk is too big, so you have to transform. I thought that this was a nice touch.
I really thought the story was great and was very original. The story starts out with S.H.I.E.L.D. and Iron Man chasing the Silver Surfer through the sky. Then all of a sudden, the Silver Surfer is shot and shattered into several cosmic bricks, and they fall to the Earth. The bricks contain a huge amount of powerful energy and Doctor Doom wants to collect all of the bricks to create a weapon called “The Doom Ray of Doom. Doctor Doom along with Loki get some of the most powerful Marvel villains to help get the bricks. Nick Fury, the leader of S.H.I.E.L.D., learns about this, and he gets together a team of super heroes that must try and stop Doctor Doom’s evil plan.
I felt that the story was exciting, and it was full of humor. There are tons of jokes that will make you laugh. That is another reason I enjoy the Lego-themed games so much. There is a ton of humor packed into each game.
The graphics are awesome. The characters are very detailed, and all of their special powers and characteristics were captured nicely. Every character has its own unique attacks, weapons, and moves.
The cinematic scenes look great and are stunning. The backgrounds and levels also look amazing. When you get to the open world, there is so much going on in the city. There are tons of vehicles driving around, people walking on the street and objects to interact with. Everything flows very nicely together.
The controls are very easy to learn, and just about everyone will be able to pick up the controller and play. There is an in-game tutorial that explains how to control your character and what you need to do in certain situations. There are also tons of hints that will come up on the screen that will tell you what you may need to do. For example, if you are by something that is burning, text will come on the screen that will say, “Use Captain America’s shield to put out the flames.” You will also learn that each character has its own unique ability, and you will have to use it to get through certain stages.
One neat feature is that there are usually two super heroes on the screen at one time, and at times, there will be three also. You can switch back and forth between the characters by pushing the triangle button. However, two players can play at the same time on the PS4 version, and that is a lot of fun.
Another thing that I really enjoyed about “Lego Marvel Super Heroes” is that there is a puzzle you will need to figure out on just about every screen. Most of the objects on the screen can be destroyed and sometimes when you destroy a certain item, Lego blocks will be left behind and you can build something that will help you get to the next screen.
As you play, you can collect many different things that will unlock figures, vehicles, and cheats in the game. When you defeat enemies or destroy something, little Lego pieces will be left behind, and they are also just laying all over the game. You can use these to buy characters and vehicles. There are movies that you can find and secret Lego Bricks. If you pause the game you can see how many items there are to find in each level. One really cool feature is that you can go back and play the level over in a free-play mode, and you can select all of the characters you have unlocked. There are many things in each level that you will not be able to open or access until you have unlocked a character later in the game. I thought that this was great because it gives the game a great replay value.
One thing that really makes “Lego Marvel Super Heroes” a lot of fun is that there is a new open world that you can explore. There are unique buildings that you can go in like the Daily Bugle or Stark Tower. There are tons of side quests that you can do, and if you complete them, you will be rewarded with golden bricks. There are also vehicles that you can hop into and drive around the city. There are characters and vehicles that you can find while you are wandering around that you can buy and play as or drive. One nice thing is that there are icons that appear on the map that will let you know if there is a side mission, hidden brick or character in the area. You can also set a marker and a little line will show you where you need to go to get to your marker. This was very helpful.
I really enjoyed Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment’s “Lego Marvel Super Heroes” for the PS4 a lot. I really enjoyed the story and thought that the graphics were awesome. I also thought that the selection of super heroes were great and were very unique. The open world was exciting and fun to explore. There are so many side quests and things to do that this will keep players busy for a very long time. I know that fans of the Lego games and Marvel comics are really going to enjoy “Lego Marvel Super Heroes” a lot, and I would highly recommend it.
“Lego Marvel Super Heroes” is rated “E10+” for cartoon violence.
