Over-the-top, bloody, and bursting with content, Mortal Kombat is a return to form for the franchise.
Despite spending about a month in 1993 pouring over magazine shots of the arcade cabinet for Mortal Kombat 2, reading character Bios and memorising movelists, I wouldn’t call myself a Mortal Kombat fan. Sure, I loved the first 2 games but so did everyone. They were amazing!
Luckily for me this latest Mortal Kombat game is rebooting the series in hopes of restoring its former glory and recapturing the essence of what made it an early nineties arcade favourite. With a roster of familiar faces, a simplified but robust combat system and all the gore and fatalities that were missing from its predecessor; MK Vs DC Universe, it’s doing a damn good job.
The combat system feels tight and well balanced and whether you’re a beat-em-up veteran or a genre newbie you’ll be performing blood-splattered fatalities and the bone-crunching X-ray combos in minutes. It’s easy enough that you can jump straight in but has the depth to keep you up half the night coming up with new combos and juggles to take online.
With tutorials, Training modes, a narrative driven Story mode, standard Arcade ladders and Tag Team play as well as an extensive array of challenge matches and old skool “Test Your Might” minigames there’s more than enough to keep you occupied, though thankfully they stopped shot of Mortal Chess or Mahjong Kombat. (Though if you’re reading this Netherrealm, I would totally play Mahjong Kombat)
If you’re just after some post-pub nostalgic button-mashing it doesn’t disappoint but equally, if you’re the type to unlock every last alternate costume and piece of concept art then you’ll definitely be getting your money’s worth.
First of short series to debut on Machinima.com next week, one week before next game in franchise launches.
It looks like April will be a busy month for Mortal Kombat fans. On April 19, the latest game in the series, titled simply Mortal Kombat, will debut on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
The eagerly awaited next installment in the franchise–which just went gold–will see the return of the gruesome fatalities and hardcore violence that the series is known for.
Now, it appears that the prior week will also have something new for Mortal Kombat fans. Hadoken.net reports that at 4 p.m. PDT next Tuesday, Machinima.com will stream the first episode of a live-action series of shorts based on the Mortal Kombat universe.
The event will apparently be available via the network’s YouTube channel, on a page currently marked as private. However, the screening was tacitly confirmed by series director Kevin Tancharoen via his tweet.
The live-action series, first teased via an eight-minute film released last June, features a reimagined Mortal Kombat universe and will feature such characters as Reptile, Baraka, and Sonya. It will be produced by Warner Bros., which is also publishing the game.
The company promised that the series will “take gamers deep into the history of warriors they know and love such as Scorpion, Johnny Cage, and Liu Kang.” Black Dynamite and Spawn star Michael Jai White will reportedly play Jackson “Jax” Briggs in the series.

News outlet says Gearbox Software’s M-rated action game “takes sexism to a new level”; Women’s Media Center VP calls game’s depiction of women “extremely harmful.”
In early February, Fox News slammed Bulletstorm, questioning whether it was the “worst video game in the world.” Now, the Rupert Murdoch-owned news outlet is taking up arms against Gearbox Software’s long-awaited Duke Nukem Forever, calling it “awfully sexist.”
According to an article on FoxNews.com, 1996′s Duke Nukem 3D–”which made millions for its developers and transformed the entire world of video games–depicted women as strippers and prostitutes.” And now, according to Fox, Duke Nukem Forever is primed to “take sexism to a new level.”
To illustrate its point, the story says the game opens with a scene where Duke is seen receiving implied fellatio from twins in school getups. This is where Women’s Media Center vice president Jamia Wilson takes severe offense.
“It was offensive then and it’s even more offensive now,” she told Fox News. “These depictions of women are extremely harmful, especially to young women.”
Specifically, the scathing article’s main focus is on Duke Nukem Forever’s Capture the Babe multiplayer mode. This game mode–according to the Official Xbox Magazine (via Eurogamer) — has players carrying a character, the Babe, around. If she yells, players are given the option to slap her.
