The London riots caught us all by surprise. Whether or not they should have done is a question best left to David Dimbleby and his bumbling corral of inquisitors. But one thing I do remember thinking during the unrest, between feverishly refreshing Twitter and peeping at the BBC out of the corner of my eye, is this: someone should make a game about rioting?

Less Pocket, More Monster: Dragon’s Prophet
SOE’s new F2P fantasy MMO, Dragon’s Prophet, sounds like Pokemon but dragonier. I mean it, too. That is exactly what it sounds like. See for yourself: “In a world shaped by dragon-kind, more than 300 unique dragons roam the lands. Fight, capture, train and ride them in order to unlock their unique skills and abilities.” But, in reality, that’s only one aspect of its sky-searing DNA. The rest, meanwhile, might seem a bit more familiar if you’re from ’round these PC-friendly parts.
Snikt And Smash: Marvel Heroes
When X-Men: The Last Stand crammed in all the mutants it made for a crowded frame and some of Marvel’s most uncanny were rendered as little more than computer-generated blobs of colour. Free-to-play multiplayer online ARPG Marvel Heroes also appears to subscribe to the ‘more actually can be more’ philosophy, but hopefully to greater effect.
Farming Simulator 2013
OMG OMG OMG! Due out tomorrow and I can barely contain my excitement. For anyone out there calling themselves a hardcore gamer tomorrow will indeed be a day of jubilation and totally ignoring their loved ones so they can get more gaming done. Just think of all those lettuces waiting to be harvested. Really gets my juices flowing.
Captain Scarlett DLC For Borderlands 2 Lands Oct 16th
You can imagine my disappointment when I heard about this. Not the unparalleled mega-classic of science fiction drama Captain Scarlet, featuring the indestructible captain of the near future, but Captain Scarlett (pictured above), featuring some kind of hook-handed lady buccaneer of the wastes.
Jim Wants To Show You Some Lost Planet 3
No, not our Jim, although the similarities are uncanny. Though we suspect the Jim in Lost Planet 3 is based on our own Jim’s days when he used to run around with a camera on his shoulder, shooting at giant insects in icy wastelands. You can see a new nine-minute narrated walkthrough video below.
Mindcraft: Notch Releases Early 0x10c Footage
Markus “Not”-”Minecraft”-”ch” Persson* has released some footage of his work on Elite-style space game, 0x10c (pronounced “Notch’s New Game”), in which you control the pilot aboard a working spacecraft, filled with varied and vulnerable systems.
Transformers Universe Footage Rolls Out
Three or four years ago, I would have fallen to my knees and begged for a Transformers MMO. Today I would not, which is partly because I feel totally burned out on MMOs and partly because my knees increasingly make this unpleasant clicking noise if I bend them too abruptly. But you can be damned sure I’ll at least have a big old fiddle with the character creator in Jagex’s upcoming Transformers Universe even if the long-haul of levelling and whatnot is too galling.
Of Orcs And Men And Launch Trailers
It was only May when I was first amazed to discover that spiders could develop games. And now Of Orcs And Men is out tomorrow. Those industrious arachnids. You can see a completely unhelpful CGI launch trailer below, that doesn’t give you any idea whatsoever what the game’s like. Because that’s what trailers are for, right?! Silly billies.
Hue & Cry: Crytek Talk Crysis 3 Multiplayer
Crysis 3 producer Mike Read has been talking about the new modes for the upcoming game, and you can see them in action below. I’ve no real idea how popular the Crysis multiplayer modes have been over the years. I’ve played all of them, but, well, I can’t ever remember anyone talking about them after release. Mods yes, but vanilla multiplayer? No. Anyone out there actually play it? What are we missing?
