Game of Thrones action RPG coming from Atlus

Posted on Nov 10, 2011 01:39:07 AM

Action role-playing game based on fantasy epic gets a publisher, early 2012 release window.

The ongoing A Song of Ice and Fire series has been a favorite among fantasy buffs for more than a decade, and its popularity has exploded with the recent HBO Game of Thrones adaptation. A real-time strategy game based on the franchise from Cyanide Studios hit shelves in September, and now the same developer has a publisher for its in-development Game of Thrones action role-playing game.

Atlus announced today that it will be handling publishing duties for the Game of Thrones action RPG adaptation. The game will feature many familiar locations from the books, and likenesses of some of the actors from the HBO series.

The “30-plus hour” game puts players in the shoes of one of the two original characters with different motivations. As former members of Robert’s Rebellion, players will have to battle through numerous quests as power over the Seven Kingdoms is contested.

On the gameplay front, the title will feature an “active slowdown tactical combat engine” that slows time and lets players make strategic battle decisions. Character interactions and player decisions are also said to have a big impact on the game’s world.

In news that is likely to please fans, Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin is directly involved with the creation of the game’s scenarios and story. Cyanide studio director Yves Bordeleau told USA Today, “All the situations and storyline were written under [Martin's] monitoring in order to fit with the story the fans have already read, and thus fulfill their expectations.”

The Game of Thrones action RPG is set for an early 2012 release on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

GTA 5 Announcement Trailer

It’s here and the rumour mill is already grinding away at full speed. Suggestions that Tommy Vercetti is the main character and San Andreas is the setting. Rumours also abound that this is only the story of one of four playable characters and 3 more trailers are to be released. Fingers crossed for more trailers, eh?

Here’s Nightwing in Action in Batman: Arkham City

Feast your eyes on the grown-up laughing young daredevil as he throws down on the thugs of Arkham City. The clip highlights his specialized weaponry and shows off his acrobatic fighting style, too. You’ll be able to start playing as Dick Grayson in new Wayne Manor and Main Hall challenge maps next week.

World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria Trailer

Posted on Oct 24, 2011 05:19:00 PM

I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised that WoW’s pandas look quite good in motion, but, well, they do. You can see them frolicking in their Asia-themed themepark world below in the Mists of Pandaria trailer. Cute hot air balloons, too.

These Panda types will apparently be a neutral race, with players deciding between alliance and horde once they get past the starting stuff. The pandaren starting area is, also, on the back of a giant turtle. Hmm.

Cortex Command Is Still Unfinished, Amazing

Posted on Oct 21, 2011 05:29:26 PM

I love Cortex Command. It’s one of my favourite indies ever. The current build of this brain-defending, bunker-building, robot-deploying, side-scrolling tactical digging and shooting game means that it has a tonne of interesting scenarios you can set up and play, but currently the campaign (which I’d jumped into to take a look at) is a bit completely broken. Cortex Command has been out in “work in progress” beta form for about 47 years, but there’s been a bit of progress of late, and so I’m hoping we’ll see that campaign built upon soon. Nevertheless, for those of you who’ve not played this yet – and you really should have done by now – there’s a free (and sadly harshly limited) demo on the site.

A warning: this one of those games that takes some getting used to before you see the real magic of it, and I suspect the demo isn’t long enough to get all that across. The quirky mannequin clunkiness of the character is the whole point: it’s an absurd slapstick physics robot battle toolbox, and it has a bit of a modding scene now to make things even more ridiculous. I’ve posted what is now quite an old gameplay trailer below, but I think it gets the point across.

I am definitely not going to recommend getting the full game unless you’ve played the demo, as it’s definitely an acquired taste. It can be fiddly, and really takes some time to get into the pace of it. But when you’ve got a great scenario ticking over properly, and robots get smacked all over the place, and you are managing on crisis after the next, it’s hilarious.

I plan to play a bit more and perhaps write some more thoughts later in the week. Join me?

No Time To Explain!

Posted on Oct 12, 2011 01:32:25 PM

No Time To Explain is a game about time paradoxes, jetpack guns and ribs in people’s eyes. It’s also an indie platformer! It first appeared as a brief but hilarious flash game and has since been fleshed out into a full game thanks to generous donations to the dev’s kickstarter page.

Here’s a trailer:

The Syndicate Announcement Trailer

Posted on Sep 29, 2011 04:33:43 PM

Okay, here it is: the first Syndicate trailer. Heavy on the dubstep and men in trenchcoats. Gosh, this makes me realise that the original Syndicate came out in the era before there were generally trailers for games.

- No waving policeman?
- HUD elements at 0:34 look interesting.
- Gosh, they meant that “breaching” enemies thing, at 0:40.
- 0:50: wubwubstep!
- 1:03: a boot stamping on a human face. Forever?
- I like the casually shooting people at 1:16.
- Some men certainly get shot.
- No sign of co-op yet?
- Logo is a bit weak. Looks like Any Old Action Movie font.

Guild Wars 2 Wants To Show You The Asura

New video footage and photographs from the Guild Wars 2 tourist board have arrived. This time it’s details on the creepy Asura race. I don’t trust those little goblin things. You could say I’m an… Asuracist! Gosh, I’m funny. Take a look at the new footage, and some new screenshots, below.

Here’s the video:
